In 1586 Jesuit missionaries travelling in the area founded Trancoso, carving out of the rainforest a grassy town-square on a hilltop overlooking the ocean and surrounding it by fifty simple casas and a small church and mission. This area, known as the Quadrado, has been preserved for centuries and is today one of the most picturesque settings in Brazil.
By carefully restoring 5 of the Quadrado’s historic casas here and creating new ones with local artisans using traditional building methods and reclaimed materials, designer Wilbert Das opened UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa in May 2009.
UXUA’s 13 casas range from 1 to 3 bedrooms, and offer the space and privacy of a stay in a private home complimented by hotel services delivered with all the hospitality typical of the region.
The hotel blends seamlessly into its environment, with 7,000 square meters of private gardens holding an aventurine quartz pool, lounge, gym, and the innovative Vida Lab directed by a doctor of nutrition which exploring the riches of Brasil’s rainforests for unique treatments in UXUA’s Vida Spa and refined nutrition served in UXUA’s internationally acclaimed restaurants, both in the town center and at the rustic beach lounge - one of the most acclaimed beach spots of Brazil. UXUA’s guests enjoy exclusive access to the Atelier, where UXUA owner Wilbert Das employs local artisans using traditional looms and other tools to craft one-of-kind clothing and accessories from organic materials.
