Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel’s facilities reflect genuine ancient Peruvian traditions, luxury, and views of the biodiversity within Machu Picchu Archaeological Park. Aware of the proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and unique natural environment, the hotel is committed to sustainability and conservation and works closely with local communities as well as the Rainforest Alliance. The hotel's guest activity programs honor that commitment: available leisure activities include Peruvian cooking lessons, eco-hikes along the Urubamba River, bird-watching and summit treks in the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park. Other available activities that offer insight to ancient Peruvian traditions include a Payment to the Earth Ritual, a Pachamanca cooking experience, and tours of Machu Picchu with a shaman and his translator.

The hotel’s Aqlla Spa is the perfect place to refresh a wearied body after a day full of outdoor adventures. Aqlla meaning, “chosen one” in Quechua, is a reference to the way the staff treats guests. The spa offers massages, hydrotherapy, a sauna, reflexology, and manicure and pedicure services.

Sumaq, which means “beautiful” in Quechua, is owned and operated by the Peruvian-born Clavijo family. Originally opening in 2007 as the first five-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, the hotel has recently undergone a major re-design. Italian-Peruvian designers, Carmine Furgione and Sandra Chavez Olivieri drew upon Chakana, an Andean cross symbolizing the four elements of nature: fire, water, earth and air.
